Community Board

The Community Board was introduced in 2022 and replaces the former Liaison Group (BULG). The Board is an important way of connecting the University with our communities, to discuss areas for collaboration, to work together on issues of common interest, and to develop our civic engagement (also known as civic mission). The Board provides a platform to discuss the University’s strategic aims and how it can work with a range of partners to improve the wellbeing of communities across north Wales.

��ϲʿ�� Community Board Meeting (11th March 2024) held at the Students Union Activities Hub, ��ϲʿ��. In attendance: Representatives from the following bodies/institutions attended the meeting: ��ϲʿ��; Cyngor Gwynedd Council; Adra; ��ϲʿ�� Civic Society; Mantell Gwynedd, Betsi Cadwaladr Health Board, Menter Mon, North Wales Regional Equality Network (NWREN), EcoAmgueddfa, ��ϲʿ�� City Council.

Discussion matters: With Iwan Williams chairing, the following presentations were given; Martin Hanks - an overview of the work of ��ϲʿ�� City Council; Darren Morley - ��ϲʿ�� Short Courses; Dr Beth Edwards – A Space for Children and Young People: A Community Consultation; Dr Lori Beckett – Poverty and Learning in Urban Schools project. Further updates were received from Mantell Gwynedd, North Wales Regional Equality Network (NWREN), Ecoamgueddfa, Storiel, ��ϲʿ�� Civic Society, Adra, Menter Môn, Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board and the ��ϲʿ�� Students Union Volunteering Body. An update from the Community Engagement team was received, including the success of the recent ��ϲʿ�� Science Festival and the forthcoming IWA event on the 19th March and an update on the third call of the ��ϲʿ�� Community Fund. The fund recently awarded a further 7 projects bringing the total number of projects to 18 since the fund was launched. Date and time of the next meeting will be arranged for June 2024.

Discussion matters: With Professor Andrew Edwards chairing, the following matters were discussed; an overview of Ty Gwyrddfai and how the facility is supporting local communities was given by the Director Customer and Communities at Adra; an update on the work being undertaken by Mantell Gwynedd; a presentation from Dr Marcel Ferrand (Student Support Manager), a recipient of the Civic Engagement Community Collaboration Fund, on how the funds were used to arrange two beach clean-up events with a group of International Students; an update from the Civic Mission team, including the Community Fund, the Community Day and the various events that the team have attended over the summer months. Date and time of the next meeting will be arranged for February 2024.��

Discussion matters: With Gwenan Hine chairing, the following matters were discussed; update from Martin Hanks of ��ϲʿ�� City Council and the various developments in and around ��ϲʿ�� City Centre; a presentation from Chris Roberts, North Wales Dragons Football Club, a recipient of the Civic Engagement Community Collaboration Fund; an update on the Parc Y Coleg developments from the Director of Estates and Campus Services; update from the Civic Mission team, including an update on the Community Fund, the Community Day and the various events scheduled over the weeks; Student Volunteering ��ϲʿ�� (SVB) gave an overview of some of the projects underway and thanked ��ϲʿ�� City Council for their continued support; it was noted that Graduation week would be held at the University during 10 – 14 July. Discussion matters: With Professor Andrew Edwards chairing, the following matters were discussed: The Ukrainian Welcome Centre at ��ϲʿ��; update on the Main Arts Quad development; feedback from the IWA – ��ϲʿ�� event in October on Sustainable Tourism; update on the North Wales Medical School; presentation from the Chair of the North Wales Regional Equality Network (NWREN); presentation from the City Director of ��ϲʿ�� City Council and the range of projects to help regenerate the city centre; brief summary on the Parc Y Coleg / College Park; presentation from the Civic Mission team, including an update on the website, launch of the Community Fund, the Community Day and the feedback from the Community Board questionnaire; update on the work of Student Volunteering ��ϲʿ�� and the ��ϲʿ�� Welsh Students Union (UMCB) on the various projects involving the Older People, Children & Young People, the Environment, Wellbeing and Fundraising. Discussion matters: With Professor Andrew Edwards chairing, the following matters were discussed: Support for refugees from Ukraine; feedback on the summer Graduation Ceremonies; appointment of the new Vice-Chancellor; update on the Parc y Coleg/College Park and Internal Quad; summary of the Pontio work programme; presentation of the new Civic Engagement strategy, as well as the new webpage on the University website; the staff questionnaire on external engagement and a summary of the event discussing tourism in Pontio on 6th October jointly organised with the Institute of Welsh Affairs; update on the work of Student Volunteering ��ϲʿ��, including an event to celebrate 70 years of volunteering in ��ϲʿ��; brief summary of the work of the North Wales Regional Equality Network; update on the work of the ��ϲʿ�� Welsh Students Union (UMCB); brief summary of the work of North Wales Police in the community in ��ϲʿ��; discussion on how to strengthen communications between the University and community; update on the University’s student recruitment work; brief summary of the work of ��ϲʿ�� City Council and work to regenerate the city centre; update on the M-SParc ‘On Tour’ project in ��ϲʿ��; brief discussion on housing matters and supporting students in ��ϲʿ��.��
